If you avoid confrontation every time by saying, “you have to choose your battles,” you’re no longer wise. You’re a wuss. Don’t let a problem fester and think you’re doing the world a favor by “letting it go” or “not playing games.” Be a truth teller. Make change happen. Speak your words in love, hope, and faith. Pray for receiving ears and pure intentions. Let God use you and speak through you. Build bridges for one another not walls that can’t be torn down.

I absolutely love “Jon Courson’s Application Commentary.” If you don’t have a copy, I highly recommend it. He is an amazing communicator and perfectly illustrates how to apply God’s blessed word to your life. I jotted some notes down from his topical study of 2 Corinthians 1:4.

AW Towzer, spiritual giant of the previous generation, was right when he said, “Before God can use a person greatly, He must allow that person to be hurt deeply.” Why? Is it because God is cruel? Does God enjoy seeing us in pain? No. The issue is not cruelty. The issue is ministry. There are two essential, nonnegotiable prerequisites for those who desire to be used by God…

Compassion for people.

We may have our theology down pat, but if our hearts are not full of compassion for people, what we say will not fully be received. The old adage is true: People don’t care how much we know until they know how much we care.

Therefore God puts us in situations and tribulations, hard places and tough times, in order that we might develop compassion for people who are also experiencing difficulties–in order that we might be able to say, “I know what you’re going through.”

Confidence in God.

Many Christians have compassion for people, but it is at the expense of God’s reputation. “I really feel for you,” they say. “I don’t know why this is happening–” the implication being, “Where is God?” On the other hand, one who truly ministers will say, “God is good. Here’s what he did in my life, and here’s what he will do for you. Put your confidence in him.”

Quite frankly gang, I think we should be more concerned about the reputation of our perfect heavenly father that about our own ability to be relatable. He has promised to never let us be tempted above that which we are able, and that all things work together for good. He has promised he will never leave us, and he has told us to rejoice in him always. Paul does that. Because he had endured beatings in prison, storms at sea, and snakebites on the beach, he had compassion for the problems of others. Because he had experienced God’s faithfulness through it all, he never compromised his belief that God is good.

I sometimes struggle with being completely open about past mistakes. I don’t want to appear weak. Every time I do let that guard down-doors open. Opportunities happen. I have to remember to not be ashamed of my past (or present) sin-but to learn from it. It’s what has shaped the road to here-it’s how I’ve learned. All that’s behind me is what God has saved me from.

Such a good read. Some passages I’ve read so far. Trying to learn:

“There is a huge difference between believing what God has promised and praying for things you’d like to be true. I encourage you to pray confidently for what God has promised. Don’t put your hope in what others promise or what you’ve been told you’ll “get” if you’re a good Christian…..Do you trust God that when he says no or “not in that way” to you, you still believe He is good and doing what is best?”

“The holy spirit will mold you into the person you were made to be. This often incredibly painful process strips you of selfishness, pride, and fear. For a powerful example of this, read in CS Lewis’ “The Voyage of the Dawn Trader” about the boy, Eustace, who becomes a dragon. In order to become a little boy again, he must undergo a tremendous amount of pain as the dragon skin is peeled away and torn from him. Only after he endures this painful process is he truly transformed from a dragon back into a boy. Sometimes the sin we take on becomes such a part of us that it requires this same kind of ripping and tearing to free us. The Holy Spirit does not seek to hurt us, but He does seek to make us Christlike, this can be painful. So, if you say you want the Holy Spirit, you must first honestly ask yourself if you want to do his will. Because if you do not genuinely want to know and do His will, why should you ask for his presence at all? But if you decide you do want to know His will, there will be moments when you have to let go of the fear of what that might mean–when you have to release your grip of control on your life and decide to be led, COME WHAT MAY.”

“God created feelings. Sure, like anything else, they can be misused and abused. But the intent and purpose of feelings came from God. Since he created emotions, why is it difficult to believe that he himself has emotions? The spirit is grieved when there is a breach in relationship, whether it be relationship with God or relationship with other people. When we are disunified, unloving, hateful, jealous, gossipy etc. that is when we grieve the spirit of God. And since he is the creator of emotions, I believe that the spirit grieves more deeply than we can even understand. I believe that if we truly cared about the holy spirits grief there would be less fights, divorces and splits in the church. I pray for the day when believers care more about the spirits grief than their own. Romans 12:18 ‘If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all’.”

Maybe I’m not one of those cool kids with TAPS (tight.a**.pants) and trendy glasses-maybe I am because really-I do wear some skinnies and some big honkin spectacles. Sometimes I even listen to obscure music. Either way, I must not be completely up with the times (I went home for Christmas break and everyone kept talking about Avatar. I had no idea what the heck they were talking about. I got some shocked looks. “Seriously, Buikema. The highest grossing movie of all time. The blue people.” I don’t have cable). So yeah, I’m especially not in the loop with cool Wes Anderson films. How have I not even heard of “Fantastic Mr. Fox?” The two munchkins I babysat last night had to reveal it to me. Kylan-what the heck. How could you not tell me. I loved it. I was imbd’ing that junk all night reading about all the actor’s voices used in the movie. I even spotted a song from “Robin Hood” playing in one of the scenes. You just gotta watch it. It’s funny. It’s so stinking cool looking. It’s fantastic.
